Racist ‘promposal’ sign will lead to ‘severe consequences’ for Southern California students – NBC News

Two students at a Southern California high college will encounter “intense consequences” following a photograph of them keeping up a racist “promposal” indication sparked outrage between students, previous students and parents on social media.

Palos Verdes Superior University Principal Dr. Allan Tyner stated in a statement Wednesday that he would be “meeting with all learners, course by course” to “review ideal conduct and how the use of hurtful racial slurs like the one utilized on this latest photo posted on social media is unacceptable.”

The picture, which was shared by a number of outraged Instagram and Twitter buyers Tuesday, exhibits the two teens holding up a signal with a person of the student’s names, followed by “you are racIst but I would give just about anything for you to go with me to promenade.” Sure letters in the identify and the sentence were capitalized and bolded to spell out the N-term.

“We have been in touch with the determined learners and their people to advise them that we are forming a reaction and foresee significant effects,” Tyner said in an e-mail despatched to mother and father Tuesday night that was obtained by NBC News.

“I am heartened by the fast response by our students and families on social media that make it quite distinct that our group does not assistance this conduct,” Tyner additional.

He stated that university officials were being investigating who took the picture, and if everyone else was current when the image was taken. NBC Information has blurred out the faces of the learners and the letters spelling out the slur.

It’s unclear who originally posted the photo on the web. Ava McCoy, 14, who is a freshman at Palos Verdes High Faculty, advised NBC Information that neither of the college students who ended up in the picture posted it to any of their social media accounts.

“I come across the indicator extremely offensive and exceptionally hurtful currently being a particular person of color,” McCoy stated. “I feel this behavior is intolerable and learners will need to be educated on the subject matter.”

The Palos Verdes Police Department said in a tweet that the department would have an increased existence at region faculties Wednesday “owing to the latest social media postings.”

Palos Verdes High School’s promenade is scheduled for Saturday. The theme is “Would like upon a star.”

About 2 p.c of the residents of the town in Los Angeles County are black, according to the most latest census data.

This just isn’t the first instance of students sharing photographs of racial promenade proposal signs on social media.
